Reads on p. 17: "Knights Ferry was founded as a trading post in 1848 by Captain William Knight, a member of Fremont Company, who settled first in 1844 at Knights Landing. Knight built and ran the first ferry across the Stanislaus River until he was killed and now lies buried under the Chinese Lilac still standing in the Knights Ferry Plaza. The ferry boat became the property of John Dent and Vantym who were Knight's partners."
